So your child wants to dance.

So your child wants to dance.

Welcome to the world of dance parenting!

If this is your family’s first experience with a dance studio, you probably have questions. When should children start? What do they wear? How many classes should they take? Will there be performances? And exactly how many bobby pins are you eventually going to own?

Probably more than you think.

Here’s what new dance parents should know.

How Young Can Children Start Dance?

Children can be introduced to movement and dance concepts at very young ages, although the appropriate starting age depends on the programs a studio offers and the individual child.

Early classes are usually less about perfect technique and more about movement, rhythm, coordination, listening, following directions, and having fun.

As students grow, instruction can become increasingly structured and technique-focused.

[See D&T Classes and Age Groups →]

What Kind of Dance Should My Child Take?

You don’t necessarily need to know immediately.

Ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, and other styles each offer something different. Your child’s age, personality, interests, experience, and goals can all help determine where to begin.

We’ve created a separate guide to help:

[Ballet, Jazz, Tap or Hip-Hop? How to Choose the Right Dance Class →]

What Will My Child Need?

Requirements vary by class, but your studio should provide information about appropriate attire, shoes, hair, and other supplies.

One of the best things a new dance parent can do is read studio communications carefully. Save important dates and ask questions when you’re unsure.

Expect a Learning Curve

Your child won’t know everything on day one.

That’s the point.

There may be movements they can’t do yet, terminology they don’t understand, choreography they forget, or days when another dancer seems to learn something faster.

Progress isn’t always linear.

Encourage effort and improvement rather than perfection.

Plan Ahead for Performance Season

Recitals and performances are exciting, but they also require preparation.

Families may need to plan for rehearsals, costumes, hair and makeup requirements, arrival times, tickets, photography, and other logistics.

Put important dates on your calendar early.

Your future self will thank you.

Be Their Support System, Not Their Second Dance Teacher

One of the greatest gifts you can give a young dancer is encouragement.

Let their instructors handle instruction and corrections. At home, you can ask questions like:

“What did you enjoy today?”

“What did you learn?”

“What are you proud of?”

That helps keep dance something your child loves rather than something they feel pressured to perfect.

Learn the Language

Dance comes with its own vocabulary.

Don’t worry. You aren’t expected to know everything.

We’ve created a D&T Dance Studio Glossary & FAQ to help families understand common dance terminology and studio language.

[Visit the Dance Glossary →]

Enjoy the Experience

There will be classes, costumes, rehearsals, pictures, performances, possibly competitions, and probably a few frantic moments along the way.

But there will also be friendships, milestones, applause, proud smiles, and memories.

Take the pictures.

Celebrate the progress.

Enjoy watching your dancer grow.

And welcome to the D&T family.

Ballet, Jazz, Tap or Hip-Hop? How to Choose the Right Dance Class

Your child wants to dance. Great!

Your child wants to dance. Great!

Now comes the next question:

What kind of dance?

If you’re new to the dance world, a class schedule filled with different styles can be confusing. Here’s a simple introduction to several popular dance styles and what your child might experience in each.

Ballet

Ballet is one of the foundational forms of dance training.

Students work on posture, alignment, balance, flexibility, control, musicality, and precise technique. Ballet terminology and foundational skills can also support training in several other dance styles.

Your child might enjoy ballet if they: enjoy structure, music, detailed instruction, graceful movement, or want to build strong foundational dance technique.

Jazz

Jazz combines technique with energetic, expressive movement.

Classes can include turns, leaps, kicks, isolations, combinations, and choreography performed to a variety of music.

Your child might enjoy jazz if they: love upbeat movement, performing, learning combinations, and expressing personality through choreography.

Tap

In tap, the dancer becomes part of the music.

Special shoes allow dancers to create rhythmic sounds with their feet. Students develop timing, coordination, rhythm, listening skills, and increasingly complex footwork.

Your child might enjoy tap if they: love rhythm, music, making noise, patterns, or learning detailed footwork.

Hip-Hop

Hip-hop classes are typically energetic and rhythm-driven, incorporating movement and choreography influenced by hip-hop dance styles and culture.

Classes can help students develop musicality, coordination, confidence, performance quality, and personal expression.

Your child might enjoy hip-hop if they: love current music, high-energy movement, expressive choreography, and bringing personality to their performance.

What About Other Styles?

As dancers progress, they may also encounter styles such as contemporary, lyrical, modern, acrobatics, musical theater, or other specialty classes, depending on the studio’s programs.

That’s one of the exciting things about dance: students don’t have to stay in one lane.

A dancer can love the structure of ballet and the energy of hip-hop.

They can tap one day and take jazz another.

Exploring different styles can help students become more versatile dancers.

So Which One Should You Choose?

Consider four things:

Age: Some classes are designed specifically for particular developmental stages.

Personality: Does your child love high-energy movement or prefer something more structured?

Interests: What music and movement naturally get them excited?

Goals: Are they dancing recreationally, exploring an interest, preparing to perform, or interested in more intensive training?

And remember: you don’t have to figure everything out alone.

The D&T team can help your family identify an appropriate place to begin.

The most important first step is often simply getting your dancer through the studio door.

New to dance?

You may hear a few words around the studio that sound like an entirely different language.

Don’t worry. We’ve put together this beginner-friendly guide to some common terms and questions dance families may encounter.

Common Dance Terms

Choreography
A planned sequence of movements that makes up a dance or routine.

Combination
A shorter sequence of dance steps taught and practiced together during class.

Technique
The foundational skills and proper execution dancers develop through training.

Warm-Up
Exercises performed at the beginning of class to prepare the body for movement.

Across the Floor
Exercises where dancers travel from one side of the studio to another while practicing specific movements or combinations.

Barre
A handrail used primarily in ballet training to provide support while dancers practice exercises and technique.

Center
Ballet or technique exercises performed away from the barre.

Chassé
A traveling step in which one foot appears to “chase” the other.

Pirouette
A turn performed on one leg.

Plié
A bending of the knees commonly used throughout ballet and other dance techniques.

Relevé
A movement in which a dancer rises onto the balls of the feet or onto pointe, depending on their level of training.

Spotting
A technique dancers use with their head and eyes while turning to help maintain orientation and control.

Recital
A performance that gives students an opportunity to showcase what they have learned.

Dress Rehearsal
A rehearsal conducted under conditions similar to the actual performance, often including costumes, staging, lighting, and performance order.

Competition Team / Performance Team
A group of dancers who receive additional training and may represent their studio at competitions, showcases, community events, or other performances.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my child need to be to start dance?

Starting ages depend on the studio’s programs and the individual child. Younger students often begin with creative movement and introductory classes before progressing into more structured technique.

Check D&T’s current class offerings for available age groups.

[View Classes →]

Does my child need previous dance experience?

Not necessarily.

Many programs are designed for beginners. When registering, pay attention to age and experience recommendations so your child is placed in an appropriate class.

What should my dancer wear?

Dress requirements depend on the class.

Dancewear and appropriate footwear help instructors see alignment and allow students to move safely. D&T will provide the specific requirements for each program.

Does my child need special shoes?

Different dance styles often require different footwear. Ballet slippers, tap shoes, and other dance shoes are designed specifically for their respective styles.

Check the class requirements before purchasing shoes.

Can my child take more than one style?

Absolutely, when appropriate for their age, schedule, and experience.

Training in multiple styles can expose dancers to different techniques, musical styles, and ways of moving.

Will my child perform?

Performance opportunities depend on the class and program. D&T offers opportunities for dancers to take what they’ve learned in the studio and experience the excitement of performing.

[See D&T in Action →]

What if I don’t know which class to choose?

Ask us!

You don’t have to become a dance expert before registering your child. Tell us a little about your dancer—their age, experience, interests, and goals—and the D&T team can help point you in the right direction.

Still Have Questions?

Every dance family starts somewhere.

Whether your child is stepping into a dance studio for the very first time or looking for their next opportunity to grow, we’re happy to help you navigate the journey.

The Benefits of Dance as a Therapeutic Activity

Sometimes you just need to move.

Sometimes you just need to move.

Children and adults alike can carry stress, frustration, excitement, nervous energy, and emotions that aren’t always easy to put into words. Dance provides an opportunity to move the body, engage the mind, express creativity, and connect with others.

While recreational dance classes are not a replacement for professional mental-health care, physical therapy, or clinical dance/movement therapy, participating in dance can still support overall well-being in meaningful ways.

Movement Can Be an Emotional Outlet

Dance gives people a physical way to express themselves.

Music and movement can create space to release energy and explore emotions without needing to explain everything verbally.

For young dancers in particular, having a healthy, creative outlet can be valuable.

Dance Encourages Mind-Body Connection

Dance asks students to pay attention.

Where are my feet? What are my arms doing? What comes next? How does this movement connect to the music?

That focus can temporarily shift attention away from outside distractions and toward what is happening in the present moment.

Physical Activity Supports Overall Wellness

Dance gets the body moving.

Depending on the style and intensity, dance can support flexibility, coordination, balance, strength, endurance, and body awareness.

And because movement happens through music and choreography, exercise can feel less like a workout and more like an experience.

Dance Can Build Confidence

Learning choreography takes practice.

At first, a movement may feel completely unfamiliar. Then, little by little, it begins to make sense.

Those small moments of progress matter.

Learning a new skill, remembering choreography, performing, and seeing improvement can help students build a stronger sense of confidence and accomplishment.

Dance Creates Connection

Dance classes also create opportunities for social interaction.

Students learn alongside peers, celebrate one another’s progress, prepare for performances together, and build relationships through shared experiences.

For some students, the dance studio becomes an important part of their community.

Creativity Matters Too

Well-being isn’t only about physical health.

People also need opportunities to create, play, imagine, and express themselves.

Dance combines all four.

More Than Steps

At D&T Dance Studio, we love teaching dance technique. But we also recognize that what happens in a dance class can extend far beyond learning choreography.

Students move.

They create.

They connect.

They challenge themselves.

And sometimes, after a long day, simply having a place to dance can make a difference.

How Fine Arts Help Create Well-Rounded Students

When families think about activities that prepare children for the future, academics and athletics often come to mind first. But participation in the fine arts can also play an important role in a student’s development.

When families think about activities that prepare children for the future, academics and athletics often come to mind first. But participation in the fine arts can also play an important role in a student’s development.

Dance, music, theater, visual arts, and other creative disciplines give young people opportunities to develop skills that reach far beyond the stage or studio.

Creativity Becomes a Skill

The arts give students permission to imagine.

They learn that there can be more than one way to approach a challenge, communicate an idea, or tell a story. That ability to think creatively can serve students in the classroom and eventually in their careers.

Students Learn Discipline

A polished performance doesn’t happen overnight.

Dancers repeat combinations. Musicians practice scales. Actors rehearse scenes. Artists revise their work.

Fine arts teach students that improvement is often the result of practice, patience, feedback, and consistency.

Confidence Grows Through Experience

Performing can feel intimidating, particularly for a young person.

But each time students learn something difficult, perform in front of an audience, or master a skill they once struggled with, they collect evidence that they are capable of doing hard things.

That confidence can follow them beyond the stage.

They Learn How to Work With Others

Dance is both an individual and collaborative art.

Students must understand their own responsibilities while remaining aware of the people around them. They learn to listen, communicate, cooperate, take direction, and contribute to something larger than themselves.

Those are skills they can carry into school, work, leadership, and relationships.

The Arts Give Students Another Language

Children and teenagers don’t always have the words to express everything they’re experiencing.

Movement, music, visual art, and performance can offer additional ways to communicate emotion, identity, imagination, and ideas.

Sometimes what is difficult to say can be easier to express through movement.

Fine Arts and Academics Don’t Have to Compete

Families can sometimes feel pressure to choose between academics and extracurricular activities.

We believe the two can complement each other.

Students can be scholars and artists. They can be analytical and creative. They can excel academically while developing talents that help them understand themselves and the world around them differently.

Developing the Whole Student

At D&T Dance Studio, dance education is about more than learning steps.

We want students to develop technique, but we also want them to learn confidence, discipline, creativity, teamwork, perseverance, and self-expression.

Because ultimately, we’re not simply helping develop better dancers.

We’re helping develop well-rounded young people.

How to Choose the Right Dance Studio for Your Child

Choosing a dance studio is about more than finding the closest class or picking a time that fits your family’s schedule. You’re choosing an environment where your child may spend hours learning, growing, making friends, building confidence, and discovering what they’re capable of.

Choosing a dance studio is about more than finding the closest class or picking a time that fits your family’s schedule. You’re choosing an environment where your child may spend hours learning, growing, making friends, building confidence, and discovering what they’re capable of.

Whether your child dreams of performing on stage or simply wants to try something new, here are some important things to consider when choosing a dance studio.

1. Look for a Place Where Your Child Can Grow

A good dance program teaches technique. A great dance program develops the whole student.

Dance can teach discipline, teamwork, creativity, confidence, perseverance, and responsibility. Look for a studio where instructors care about the person your child is becoming as much as the dancer they’re developing into.

At D&T Dance Studio, we believe dance education should help students grow both inside and outside the studio.

2. Get to Know the Instructors

Your child’s instructor will play an important role in their dance experience.

Look for instructors who understand their craft but can also communicate effectively with children at different ages and skill levels. Great teachers know when to challenge a student, when to encourage them, and how to create an environment where learning is both structured and enjoyable.

Before enrolling, take some time to learn about the studio’s instructors, their backgrounds, and their approach to teaching.

[Meet Our Team →]

3. Consider the Studio Culture

Pay attention to how the studio feels.

Are students encouraged? Do families feel welcome? Does the environment celebrate growth as well as achievement?

Dance requires vulnerability. Students are constantly learning new movements, performing in front of others, receiving corrections, and trying again when something doesn’t work the first time.

A healthy studio culture gives students room to do all of that.

4. Look at the Variety of Opportunities

Your child’s interests may change as they grow.

A young student may begin with one style of dance and eventually discover a passion for ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, contemporary dance, performance, or competitive dance.

A studio with multiple programs can allow students to explore those interests without having to start over somewhere new.

[Explore D&T Classes →]

5. Understand the Expectations

Before registering, ask about schedules, attendance, attire, performances, rehearsals, fees, parent communication, and other expectations.

Knowing what to expect makes the experience better for both dancers and their families.

6. Imagine Your Child There

Finally, ask yourself one simple question:

Can I picture my child growing here?

The right dance studio should be somewhere your child is excited to enter and where you feel confident leaving them to learn.

At D&T Dance Studio, our goal is to create an environment where dancers can learn their craft, express themselves, build meaningful relationships, and become more confident in who they are.

If you’re looking for a dance home for your child, we’d love for you to learn more about D&T.
